This is probably one of the easiest and most common rock art projects you’ll come across. With the right materials, you can even leave them outdoors as they’ll make for a great addition to your garden.

Smooth river rocks are easily available at most home improvement stores, craft supply stores, or garden centers. If you’re planning on using these on your yard, you’ll want to paint your rock with water-resistant Patio Paint.

After that, just get a paintbrush, design your ladybug, and coat it with a final layer of outdoor formula sealer.

2. Take It to the Next Step With Garden Markers

If you love gardening, you probably have a variety of plants in your yard. Why not hit two birds with one stone by having your kids make some garden markers to label your plants.

Since they’ve already painted ladybugs, this won’t be a challenge anymore because it uses the same concept.

You didn’t just keep your kids entertained for the next hour. You also got the added bonuses of teaching your kids something new and beautifying your garden at the same time.

Everyone loves the blubbering Despicable Me’s minions. Having your kids make their own army of minions using rocks is one of the best rock art projects to keep them entertained for hours on end.

All you need are some stones, acrylic paint, paintbrushes and some black and silver sharpies. Given their random shapes, painting minions on rocks will definitely provide hours of entertainment for the kids.

They’ll come up with the funniest looking minions that will surely get them giggling for a long time. You even saved money on actually buying toy minions!

Another great rock art idea is to have your kids make you some paperweight word rocks. They’ll make for great tokens for friends or even just for personal use in your office.

Similar with the projects above, all you need is some rocks, acrylic paint, sharpie, paintbrush, and some decorative pens. Make sure to wash your rocks to free them of any debris.

Paint the rock with some light-colored paint before using the sharpie and the pens to write the word and design the rock. Choose unique or positive words for your kids and have them look the words up in the dictionary.

The first one to find the word and use it in a sentence gets a prize!

5. Use Rock Art to Encourage Your Kids to Make Their Own Board Games

|

Believe it or not, it’s actually a great idea to have your kids make their own board game pieces using rock art. Start with something simple like tic-tac-toe.

Get nine pieces each of black stones and gray or white stones. Simply use a white-colored sharpie or paint to draw Xs on the black stones, and a black-colored sharpie or paint to draw Os on the gray or white stones.

If you want to take it a step further, you can even have your kids make their very own chess game using only pebbles. This time, make sure to buy 16 pieces of black stones and 16 pieces of white stones.

Afterwards, use the opposite-coloured sharpie or paint to draw the symbols of the pieces on the stones. Your kids now have their very own personalized chess board game set.

It’ll provide hours of entertainment for the kids, while also making for a great brain exercise for them.

6. Teach Them How to Tell Time With a Rock Clock

|

Have your older kid teach his or her younger siblings how to tell time using a rock clock. This rock art craft is actually a great way to teach your kids not just how to read a clock, but even how to count or skip count.

Gather 24 rocks – 12 medium-sized rocks and 12 small pebbles. Have your kids paint the numbers 1 to 12 on the bigger rocks, and have them skip count by five from 5 to 60 on the 12 smaller rocks.

Afterwards, just print or draw a clock with no numbers and have your kids arrange the pebbles on the clock. Have them practice by cutting out hands for the clock and pinning it to the center of your printed or drawn clock.

7. Give Any Surface a More Natural Feel With a Rock Picture Frame

|

Wanna give your home or office table a more natural feel? Get your kids to decorate that old picture frame you have with some polished pebbles.

All you need is some polished rocks and some super glue. Take the frame apart, use the super glue to attach the stones to the borders of the frame, and once it’s dry, put it back together again.

You can use the frame to house your family picture or even just your favorite quote to keep you motivated.

8. Create Fascinating Rock Art Designs Using Melted Crayons

Melted Crayon Rock Art

This one requires some adult supervision, but it’s a rock art project that even you will enjoy making. Start by placing some stones in an oven and heating them to about 100 degrees Celsius.

While you heat the stones, start preparing your work area. Place a few layers of newspaper on the surface and make sure it’s thick enough for the crayon wax to melt off of.

After about 15-20 minutes, use oven gloves and take one hot stone out of the oven at a time. Place the hot stone on your work surface and get your crayon of choice.

Now, gently rest the crayon on the stone and move it across the surface as it melts and pours down the side. Try using a combination of multiple colors in every stone and watch as the colors mingle and mix to create a wonderful design.

9. Use DIY Moon Rocks to Make Your Kids Feel Like They’re in Outer Space

|

Speaking of fascinating rock art designs, with a little craftiness, you can also create your very own sparkling moon rocks without even using an actual rock. For this little rock art craft, all you need is 1/4 cup of water, 4 cups of baking soda, some black food coloring, and some silver and gold glitter.

Start by mixing the water and baking soda together in a plastic bin. When they’re mixed well, add lots of glitters and some food coloring.

You can allow your kids to play with the mixture for a while. Just make sure to clean their hands afterwards because they will get messy.

When they’re done, you can mold the sand using your hand for you to shape them into little rocks. Add some craters by pressing your fingers into it.

Let the moon rocks form by allowing them to dry overnight. While they may be brittle, your kids will definitely love looking at them especially when you leave them in their room after turning off the lights.
