I don’t know about the kiddos in your life, but my daughter loves to play with pretend food. The great thing about play food and kitchen sets (we still use this one I made over all the time!) is that it’s a pretty big age range that will play with them and you can get years and years out of a play food setup. I noticed that my daughter commented that some big felt balls I had in my craft stash looked like ice cream scoops (and she wanted to play with them to have an ice cream party for her lovies) and I thought that it would be a quick and easy thing to turn into a little DIY play ice cream sundae kit! And if you’re not up for the sewing that some kiddo DIYs entail, you’re in luck! You can do this whole thing as a no-sew project and it will be done in a snap …
Supplies:
–4.5 cm wool felt balls for the ice cream (I did the clay, whisper, and pear colors to add to pink ones I already had)
–1 cm wool felt balls for the cherries (I did the tractor color)
–white felt for whipped cream
–brown ric rac ribbon for chocolate sauce
-bits of assorted colors of felt for sprinkles
–ice cream containers
-ice cream bowls (like these)
–printable sticker paper (here are the flavor labels I used on a 4 x 6 sticker paper)
To make the sprinkles, just cut strips of felt 1/4″ wide and cut into little strips to make sprinkles! I put them in an old sprinkle jar and you can shake them out just like real ones!
You can use ric rac ribbon for chocolate sauce (or a tan color for caramel sauce) and little red felt balls for cherries, and you can follow this tutorial for a no-sew whipped cream (or this one if you can handle super easy sewing).
I love those little ice cream containers to keep the different flavors in, and printing out the little flavor labels adds a touch of authenticity to it as well (if you don’t have sticker paper you can print them on regular paper and glue or tape them on the containers as well).
It’s just the cutest little thing, isn’t it!? I’m going to save one extra ice cream container to put the toppings in so I can keep them all together when not in use. You can also make paper ice cream cones to add to your set, or paint one of the cups brown and draw lines on it for a waffle bowl! This would be a really cute gift for a kid as well all put together in a cute basket.
Now, like all kid DIYs and toys, you have to adjust for the age of the kid. I think this would be fine for smaller toddlers if you took out the little cherry balls (the ice cream balls are much too big to be choking hazards). So if you still have a kid that puts things in their mouth, just adjust as needed to keep them safe.
