We are all about upcycling products here at home because it’s a great way to teach our children to make the most out of every item that comes through our front door. This week, we decided to work on a DIY craft that transforms a food container into a bird feeder, and it was so much fun to do!

How To Make A DIY Bird Feeder

An adult should cut out a hole out from the front of the box and remove all of the Chewy products from the inside. Set aside, snack while crafting, or wait until you’ve gone through your box of bars!

You will want to make sure to leave enough of the bottom of the DIY bird feeder box still intact so you can fill the base with bird seeds.

Now, it’s time to paint your DIY birdhouse as desired. I chose to give mine a birthday present kind of feel while my daughter went with more of a solid color vibe.

Allow for your custom cardboard bird box to dry completely. Then add the twine on top. This will be how you hang your bird box from either a branch or a nail.

By the way, do you see the plastic trays that we turned into paint containers for the arts and crafts project? It worked like a charm for this DIY bird feeder craft idea!

It’s important to let your product dry completely before you apply your last layer – the varnish gloss. This gloss will help to try to make the Quaker box water-resistant. Mind you, this product is not made of wood and won’t last an entire season, but it is a great arts and crafts project to work on together with your family.

Once completely dry, your children will enjoy watching your local wildlife come together for a quick bite. It’s also the craft that keeps on giving, as you’ll likely want to make a new version or design every few weeks once the birds have used them!

As an additional note – you don’t really have to paint these if you don’t want to – truly! You could quickly upcycle any Quaker Chewy Granola box as soon as they are empty. Just reuse the twine and set out some new birdseeds. EASY!

As far as the wooden sticks go, my daughter wanted to make a brand new roof on her DIY birdhouse and so she customized her look. Personally, I kept my box intact and didn’t add any of the wooden sticks. That’s why I wrote that the glue and sticks were optional. It’s all about how much you want to spend on this DIY bird feeder craft.

Doing this craft outside allows for the breeze to speed up the drying of the paint – so it is highly recommended! Once everything is dry and you are happy with your pattern, it’s time to seal the deal. Grab your topcoat and give it one final layer. Again, give your Quaker Chewy box time to dry.

Choose where you’d like to hang your DIY birdhouse designs and then fill the base with fresh bird seeds. Then just sit back and wait until your feathery neighbors come in for a tasty treat.
