Kids Seed Bomb Activity – So fun for Spring and Summer!

Posted by admin on

I love a good children’s craft, especially one that gets them outside in nature, and this Kids Seed Bomb Activity does exactly that! These are SO much fun to make. Squishing the water out of the paper pulp was my children’s favorite part! Of course, the concept is simple, but I have some extremely helpful tips and tricks which will make this easy and not (so) messy!

How to Create a Kids Seed Bomb Activity

First, you only need a few basic supplies. However, there is one tool which will make this infinitely easier and more fun! I’ll link it for you:

Tools Needed for a Kids Seed Bomb Activity

  • Scissors – Scissors are optional. I actually preferred to tear the paper. I’ll explain more about that below.
  • Mesh Strainer – This was the most important part of the activity, in my opinion!
  • Black Marker
  • Blender of Food Processor
  • Medium-Sized Bowls – You’ll need a bowl for every color of paper you’re using if you don’t want to mix the colors, although mixing them would look pretty cool!

Supplies to Make Seed Bomb Pops for Kids

  • Packets of Flower Seeds
  • Water
  • Wooden Popsicle Sticks – These are optional, but I really like using them because you can write the flower seed names on the sticks.
  • Construction Paper – This type of paper breaks down the best in water and is great for making paper pulp! Plus, your kiddoss can choose their favorite colors to use.

Gather your supplies. As I mentioned above, the scissors are optional. When you’re figuring out how much paper to use, know that two pieces of construction paper will create one seed bomb. Of course, this could vary depending on the size you make your seed bombs and the size of the construction paper.

First, tear the construction paper into one-inch pieces. I think tearing helps them absorb water better, rather than cutting with scissors. But, you do whatever is easiest and it’ll be just fine.

After that, soak the squares in water for 1-2 hours. This will get the paper good and mushy, which will make it easy to turn into pulp in your food processor or blender! It doesn’t matter how much water you use; just be sure the paper is covered.

[TAG4]

Next, dump the paper and the water into the blender or food processor. It doesn’t matter how much water you use, because it will get squeezed out anyway. Blend until pulpy. In 1/2 cup amounts (approximately) push the water out of the pulp in the strainer. First, I tried the entire amount and that didn’t work as well. Working in small batches was much easier and faster.

[TAG5]

Next, mix the paper pulp with the wildflower seeds. You may need to add a small bit of water back into the pulp to make it pliable enough to mix well and mold.

Lastly, write the names of the flowers on the popsicle sticks and place into the seed bombs. You might have to press hard if the spheres are formed very tightly. Let them dry overnight or out in the sunshine!

What is the purpose of seed-bombing?

  • It provides a food source for bees.
  • When you use native flowers, it contributes to the revitalization of the local habitat.
  • It adds beauty and color to land which may not currently have wildflowers.
