I have to admit that baking oranges never crossed my mind.
Until I grabbed the trader joe’s dried oranges. They are like candy and SO good.
Which led me to googling, “Can you bake oranges?”
Absolutely! Once, I figured out that I could bake oranges in the oven, all of these fun flavor ideas came to me.
While this recipe is for baked whole oranges, I do want to try making dried orange slices in the oven next.
And maybe even use them for holiday decor – I’m not a DIY person AT ALL, but this seems doable!
As to what kind of oranges to use for baking, I love using navel and cara cara oranges in this recipe. This breakdown explains what makes a good orange for baking.
Now, I plan to incorporate several desserts made with fresh oranges for all of my fall and winter gatherings.

- Smells delicious! – Baking oranges in the oven releases some fun enzymes, flavors and smells! Your kitchen will smell good…and clean!
- Kid Friendly – We love these as a kid friendly snack for after school, as the kids come in starving. The kids love the feta honey dip too.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this baked orange recipe:

Oranges – I used large navel oranges, but blood oranges or cara cara oranges would also be great! Navel oranges are known for their sweetness and juiciness, which make them ideal for this baked orange recipe.

Ginger – The ginger spice adds a nice, subtle flavor and aroma to this dish.
- Cinnamon – A great option for dusting.
Honey Whipped Feta
For the whipped feta with honey, combine in a blender:
- Feta cheese
- Greek yogurt
- Honey
You’ll mix this awesome feta honey dip together to serve with the oranges or even dollop on top!
You’ll want to use a block of feta cheese.
How to Make Oven Baked Oranges
We love these cooked oranges as an after school snack!
- Preheat your oven to a broil.
- While the oven is pre-heating, combine the diced ginger and honey and stir. If you want an easier consistency for spreading, you can microwave it in 5-second increments.
- Cut your oranges in half.
Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut over the flesh of the orange in a “+” shape, and around the outer edge to separate the flesh from the skin.
Use a spatula, knife or brush to spread the honey ginger mixture over the orange flesh, letting it soak between the flesh membranes as well.
I like to let it sit for a few minutes to get more flavor before putting in the oven.
Place the oranges in a casserole baking pan or sheet pan with skin side on the bottom and broil for 4-6 minutes.
You may have to go a little longer depending on how warm your broil is.
You want the edges to start to golden.
What to Bake with Oranges
You could bake a variety of oranges, or other citrus fruit, like grapefruit, alongside these oranges.
You could also serve these baked oranges alongside a meal, like sheet pan salmon or chicken.

Serving them on a salad would be delicious and beautiful too! I love serving this quinoa sweetpotato salad with a bunch of different fruit!

Ingredients
- 2 large naval oranges, cut in half
- 1/8 tsp ginger
- 2 Tbsp honey
- Cinnamon, for dusting
Honey Whipped Feta
- 1 8-oz block feta cheese
- 3 Tbsp honey
- 3 Tbsp Greek yogurt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to broil.
- Cut your oranges in half.
- In a small bowl, combine the diced ginger and honey and stir. If you want an easier consistency for spreading, you can microwave it in 5 second increments.
- Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut over the flesh of the orange in a “+” shape, and around the outer edge to separate the flesh from the skin. While you may need to do this again after baking, it should help make the orange loosen easier.
- Use a spatula, knife or brush to spread the honey ginger mixture over the orange flesh, letting it soak between the flesh membranes as well.
- Place the oranges in a casserole baking pan or sheet pan with skin side on the bottom.
- Sprinkle cinnamon on top for extra flavor.
- Broil for 4-6 minutes, or until the oranges feel warm and the outer edges start to brown.
- While the orange are broiling, make your whipped feta dip. Combine feta cheese, honey and Greek yogurt in a blender and blend. Drizzle extra honey on top for serving.
- Remove baked oranges from oven and let cool. Using a spoon
or sharp knife, remove small pieces of the flesh from the segment and dip into whipped feta honey mixture, or drizzle feta dip on top. Enjoy!
