Why We Love Baked Oranges

  • Nutritious – Baked oranges offer a fun, unique way to eat fruit.
  • Year-round snack option – While cooked oranges may be more pertinent in the colder months when citrus is in season, they provide a fun, kid-friendly snack option year-round!
  • Easy to flavor, but no flavor is needed – Citrus fruits are delicious, juicy and sweet on their own, so you don’t necessarily need to flavor them! However, you can choose to flavor them a handful of different ways utilizing spices and combinations.
  • Smells delicious! – Baking oranges in the oven releases some fun enzymes, flavors and smells! Your kitchen will smell good…and clean!
  • Kid Friendly – We love these as a kid friendly snack for after school, as the kids come in starving. The kids love the feta honey dip too.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this baked orange recipe:

How to Make Oven Baked Oranges

We love these cooked oranges as an after school snack!

  • Preheat your oven to a broil.
  • While the oven is pre-heating, combine the diced ginger and honey and stir. If you want an easier consistency for spreading, you can microwave it in 5-second increments.
  • Cut your oranges in half.

Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut over the flesh of the orange in a “+” shape, and around the outer edge to separate the flesh from the skin.

Use a spatula, knife or brush to spread the honey ginger mixture over the orange flesh, letting it soak between the flesh membranes as well.

I like to let it sit for a few minutes to get more flavor before putting in the oven.

Place the oranges in a casserole baking pan or sheet pan with skin side on the bottom and broil for 4-6 minutes.

You may have to go a little longer depending on how warm your broil is.

You want the edges to start to golden.

What to Bake with Oranges

You could bake a variety of oranges, or other citrus fruit, like grapefruit, alongside these oranges.

You could also serve these baked oranges alongside a meal, like sheet pan salmon or chicken.

Use some of the juice in a baked orange chicken recipe – I need to try that next!

Serving them on a salad would be delicious and beautiful too! I love serving this quinoa sweetpotato salad with a bunch of different fruit!

FAQ

What type of orange should I use?

You can use any large orange in your local grocery store. I liked the sweet, juicy flavor of a navel orange. A blood orange would provide a little deeper flavor and a beautiful hue of color! Avoid smaller oranges, like clementines or mandarins.

How many oranges can I eat?

These roasted oranges are so good, so you may be wondering Can I eat two oranges? Yes! However, these are sweet, juicy and full of fiber, so you may feel satisfied after one. I recommend using the honey feta whip alongside to provide some fat and protein for satiety.

Can I serve these as orange slices?

Yes! You can definitely cut them into slices after baking.
