Homemade Garlic Burgers

There is no middle ground when it comes to garlic. Either you love it, or you hate it. Those of you who are fans aren’t going to get enough of this yummy Garlic Burger recipe.

The secret is the generous amount of butter and garlic sauce that keeps these cheeseburgers moist and flavorful, while the double patties and two slices of cheese make this fulling American classic.

Why Make it a Double?

Whatever you do, don’t try to “save time” by making four bigger patties instead of eight smaller ones. Thinner burgers are better for a lot of reasons.

Not only does using two patties double up on the most flavorful part of any burger, the sear, but thinner meat cooks a whole lot faster, meaning you’re less likely to end up with a burnt exterior and an undercooked interior.

Ingredients

Here’s a list of what you need:

  • Ground beef chuck (80/20)
  • Salt
  • Ground black pepper
  • Onion salt
  • Garlic salt
  • Butter
  • Garlic
  • American cheese
  • Hamburger buns

How to Make a Garlic Burger

  1. Divide ground beef into eight small balls.
  2. Combine salt, black pepper, onion salt, and garlic salt in a small bowl.

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan and add minced garlic.
  2. Heat until the garlic butter becomes fragrant.

  1. Brush the garlic butter onto the buns and place the buns on the skillet to toast until the buns begin to brown.
  2. Brush garlic butter on the ground beef balls and then sprinkle some garlic salt on top.
  3. Heat a skillet to medium-high heat.
  4. Place the ground beef balls of ground beef on the skillet and use a spatula to press them into patties.
  5. Season patties with the seasoning mixture.
  6. When the burgers have cooked on one side, flip them over and add a slice of cheese to each patty.
  7. Cook patties until desired doneness.
  8. Place two patties onto each bun.
  9. Add desired toppings to the burgers.

Cooking Garlic Burgers to Perfection

Do you like a juicy medium-rare burger, or do you prefer yours a bit more on the well-done side? Learning to cook burgers to the correct temperature isn’t as difficult as you think.

Of course, the fool-proof method uses a thermometer, but these thin patties make it challenging to get an accurate reading. Besides, there are easier ways that can help even the novice cook look like a pro.

  1. Start with room-temperature beef.
  2. Use a thick-bottom, cast iron griddle or pan. Heat the cooking surface to medium-high heat. Lightly coat the surface with a cooking spray.
  3. Unless you have a large griddle, you’ll have to cook in batches. Place the balls of ground beef four inches away from each other and the sides to allow plenty of room to flatten into patties.
  4. Cook until you start to see liquid on the meat’s surface and the bottom beginning to turn brown.
  5. If you want a medium burger, flip when you first see the juices appear but wait until the liquid is clear before turning the patty over if you like well-done burgers.
  6. Once you flip the patty, brush it with a good amount of the garlic burger sauce, and top with a cheese slice. Once the cheese is melted and the bottom is browned, set the burger aside to rest.

If you insist on using a thermometer, make sure you do it the right way. Don’t take the temperature of the burger from the top. Instead, insert the thermometer from the side until the tip reaches the center of the patty.

  • Medium-rare 130 degrees
  • Medium 140 degrees
  • Medium-well 150 degrees
  • Well-done 160 degrees

Take the burger off the heat when the temperature reaches five degrees under where you want it. Doing this allows for carryover cooking.

Undercooked burgers may be a health risk, and the USDA guidelines suggest cooking ground beef to at least 160 degrees before eating.

Tips for Serving Garlic Burgers

  • Get the best buns you can. These burgers deserve really great rolls. So, skip those cheapies that tear easily and instead opt for something a lot heartier. Kaiser rolls are perfect, but any good-quality bun will do.
  • Keep your add-ons to a minimum. This burger is so flavorful on its own, going overboard on extra sauces and toppings is only going to prevent all that garlicky goodness from coming through. If you have to add something, stick to basics like lettuce, onions, and tomatoes.

Instructions

  • Brush the garlic butter onto the cut side of the buns and place the buns on the skillet to toast. Toast the buns long enough so the bread begins to brown.
  • Place the buns cut side down in the skillet and toast until lightly browned.
  • Brush a small amount of the butter on top of the ground beef balls and then sprinkle some garlic salt on top.
  • Heat a skillet to medium-high heat. (Cast iron recommended)
  • Place the ground beef balls in the skillet and use a spatula to press the balls into patties.
  • Season patties with the seasoning mixture.
  • When the burgers have browned on one side, flip them over and add a slice of cheese to each patty. Cook to desired doneness.
  • Place two patties onto each bun.
  • Add any desired toppings. Enjoy!
