What is Lo Mein?

Lo mein is a Chinese dish made with noodles. It contains vegetables and often some type of meat or seafood, usually beef, chicken, pork, shrimp or wontons. It can also be eaten with just vegetables.

What is the Difference Between Chow Mein and Lo Mein?

Both these classic, traditional Chinese recipes have noodles in them. So what makes them different?

Chow mein has noodles that are fried to a crispy crunch.

Lo mein has noodles that are cooked softer and more tender.

Lo Mein Ingredients

Ingredients for Chow Mein

  • Half of a 6-ounce package stir fry noodles
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • cup matchstick carrots
  • 1 cup cabbage, sliced (Napa or regular cabbage)
  • 1 celery stick, diced small
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Sauce ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha
  • teaspoon garlic powder
  • teaspoon ginger
  • 2 green onions, sliced on a bias

PRO TIP: You can use fresh or dried egg noodles for this recipe. I used dried.

You can use spaghetti or linguine in this recipe.

How to Make Chow Mein

STEP ONE:Mix together all the sauce ingredients and set aside.

STEP TWO:Heat a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add oil and sesame oil to skillet. Add garlic and stir for about 30 seconds. Then add carrots, celery, and onions to the pan cooking and stirring until they soften.

STEP THREE: Add the cabbage to the pan and stir as it begins to wilt.

STEP FOUR: After the cabbage has wilted add the dry noodles to the pan.Give the sauce a quick stir and then pour over the noodles.

How to Cook Chow Mein

STEP FIVE: Let the noodles sit a few minutes to begin to soak up the sauce. Then being to slowly stir the noodles moving them apart as they cook and soften.

Remove from heat.

Garnish with additional green onions.

This will keep for three to four days in the fridge in an airtight container. The leftovers heat up great, tooo!
